Where is Ateleta and how to reach it
Running along the road that from
Castel di Sangro laeds to the sea, through the suggestive
scenery of woody mountains that slope down in Sangro river's valley, you get to a place in
which this road widens in a stretch of level ground and the river flows with its slow watercourse,
dividing the regions Molise and Abruzzi. Here, on the left coast, you can find Ateleta which is
situated on Sisto hill that, with a gentle slope, goes down until the abounding in fish Sangro
river.
The good position in the south-east of the built-up area allows the sun to illuminate the small
town all the day long and, at the same time, the mountainous barrier formed by Mount Secine
(1883 metres in height) and Mount Ellera (1473 metres in height) shelters it from the cold winds
from the north-west and mitigates its winters.
Ateleta is the last little town of L'Aquila's provinces from whom it is 120 kilometers away.
It's a very bumpy road: that's why we suggest to run along the main road Pescara-Napoli and
the Adriatica (A 14, SS 16) that is achievable Fondovalle (SS 652) and the Autosole (A 1) whose
entrance is farther Venafro.
Ateleta is also near the pateau on which rise the turistic centres of Roccaraso, Rivisondoli e Pescocostanzo,
that are achievable with a short part of a way 14 kilometers long. Beyond
them, you can reach the built-up areas of Palena and Campo di Giove.
Ateleta is also situated on the fringe of the National Park of Abruzzo and is included in the
National Park of Majella.
The municipal territory is at a high of 737 metres (Plan of Sangro) and it arrives at a high of
about 1600 metres. Here, in the past, cereals, legumes, maize and a lot of fruit were
cultivated.
Ateleta is delimited by the little towns of Gamberale (CH) in the north-east, Castel del
Giudice (IS) in th south-east, San Pietro Avellana (IS) in the south-west, Roccaraso (AQ) in the west, Pescocostanzo (AQ) in the north-west and Palena (CH) in the north.
